Nutrients in Omega Crunch

  • * Omega-3 Fatty Acids
  • * Dietary Fiber
  • * Lignans
  • * Protein

Healthy Fats in Flax Kernel

Flax kernel has a healthy fat profile. Flax kernel is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. In fact, it is one of the best  sources of omega-3 fatty acids in the North American diet.  Flax also contains a modest amount of omega-6 fatty acids and monounsaturated fat.

Omega-3 Fats

Slightly more than half of the fat in flax is the essential omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid or ALA, for short. ALA is essential in the diet of humans, meaning that it must be obtained from foods because the human body cannot produce it.

 Protein in Flax

Flax is a good source of vegetable protein containing a mix of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. The amino acid content of flax is similar to that of soy protein. Omega Crunch Shelled Flax contains more than 20% protein and is comparable to other vegetable proteins like soy protein. As and added benefit, flax is also gluten and GMO free.

Dietary Fiber

Flax is a good source of dietary fiber, which is the nondigestible material that forms the cell walls of plants. Dietary fiber is not digested and absorbed by the small intestines but passes, relatively intact, into the large bowel.

Lignans

Flax is one of the richest sources of lignans in the plant kingdom, containing up to 800 times more lignans than any other food measured. Flax lignans are phytoestrogens and antioxidants.

Is Flax Low in Carbohydrates?

Flax is low in carbohydrates (sugars and starches).  Flax normally contains about 1% carbohydrates by weight therefore flax contributes very little to the total carbohydrate intake.

 Is Flax Gluten Free?

Yes.  Flax, like other oil seeds, is gluten free.  Gluten is a protein found in wheat, oats, barley and rye, but not in flax.
