To grind or not to grind.......

Let's start from the beginning.  As many people know the shell of the flax seed is too hard for our body's to digest so we have a few options.

Some people grind flax in a coffee style grinder which grinds up the shell and releases the oil for digestion

Some people buy flax already ground in a flax meal.  Again this allows your body to get at the oils.  We do offer our burger binder flaxmeal as well. Info below.

Flax oil is an option whereby the oil has been pressed out of the shell for easy digestion.

or

Omega Crunch™ Flax Products!  The shell has been removed from the inner kernel which allows for easy digestion.

Why Omega Crunch over the others?  In our opinion taste and easy use.  We believe our product has a nice texture and our popular roasted maple is a sweet blend of pure Canadian maple syrup gently roasted with Canadian flax seed.

One draw back with the flax oil is its very quick shelf life.

Flax in a New Land
Source:  ‘Flax Council of Canada’

Flax on the North American continent dates back almost 400 years to 1617 when Louis Hébert, the first farmer in Canada, brought it to New France. With time, flax production expanded and moved westward across the continent. By 1875, European settlers were seeding the unbroken western prairie with flax brought from their homelands. Flax flourished in the clean environment, and production in the new land advanced.

The coming of two world wars increased demand for flax as a source of oil for many products in the home and factory. Following the Second World War, particularly, commercial production in North America expanded substantially.

Throughout the 50s and 60s, flax products were widely used throughout the world. Oil-based coatings beautified and protected wooden and concrete surfaces, and durable linoleum became a popular flooring material. During this time, and beyond, flax formed part of peoples' diets.

In parts of the world, flax breads and other baked goods are commonplace. Similarly, farmers and animal breeders feed flax to their livestock for maintenance of healthy coat and to improve animals' digestion.

Over the last decades, flax has stayed popular, and progressive Canadian flax producers have moved forward to meet customers' exacting standards for flax. Canada's share of flax production has increased steadily. In the 90s, Canada emerged as the major exporter of flax worldwide.

Flax Fun....

‘Flax Seeds as a Plug for Drains’

During the Manitoba Flood of 1997, old-timers suggested making a temporary block for drains
by partially filling a sock or pantyhose with flax seeds and dampening them with water. A
string tied to the end of the sock or pantyhose makes future removal easy. The water-soaked
parcel expands, effectively sealing the opening into which it is placed. It is removed after
the threat of sewer back-up is over. Source: Flax Council of Canada

Fibre!

What makes flax stand out above other whole grains is its mix of fibre. Rather than containing large amounts of one type of fibre, flax seeds contain generous quantities of both soluble and insoluble fibre.
Flax is also one of the richest sources of lignans in the plant kingdom.  * Source: Flax Council of Canada
