Shelled Flax Hair Mask (Natural Beauty)

Posted by

I love having long platinum locks, BUT I don't love how dry it leaves my hair. So, I am always looking for natural ways to replenish moisture and give back some shine to my fried and frazzled hair. I've tried lots of different things like avocado, mayo, coconut oil, olive oil etc... and they all work to some degree, but nothing quite like my recent discovery!

I'm always researching food and health benefits, especially our beloved flax, and one day I came across an article (http://bit.ly/1nTnMKQ) about using flax as a hair mask. I was immediately intrigued and knew I had to try it! I played around with amounts and found a recipe for flax eggs that works best for me. I have long, thick hair, and needed to make a lot of gel. If your hair is shorter, or thin, you could try the recipe suggested in the article.

Shelled flax does a better job of making that wonderful gelatinous mixture (that we so love!) than regular flax which hasn't been shelled. Also, to get all the benefits from this hair mask, I'd recommend leaving it on for 1 - 4 hours. Because it was going to be on my head for so long, I wanted to use a flavored shelled flax so that it had a nice aroma. I chose our Sweet Cinnamon (find it here: http://bit.ly/1pn9Idi) - it smelled wonderful!

So here's my flaxseed hair mask recipe:

  • 3 cups water
  • 5 Tbsp shelled flax. (regular or naturally flavored)

Method: Combine and bring to boil. Lower heat to a low boil (uncovered), stirring occasionally, until mixture becomes gelatinous. It takes about 25 - 30 minutes. Strain the flaxseeds from the gel. Allow to cool and apply the gel to the hair, being sure to get all the dry ends. Pile your hair up on top of your head and leave the mask in for 1-4 hours and wash out with your normal shampoo/conditioner.

That's it! So simple! Give it a try. Your hair will thank you.
